about Margie

Margie's life

Margie Meyers lived a life of service. She served God, her family, her friends, and every dog she ever met.

Margie was the first-born child, grandchild, and niece in a family that loved children boundlessly. She was born in the mountains of Western Maryland to John and Mary Meyers, and was raised in the town of Westernport alongside her sisters Kay and Karen, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who were like family. Margie grew up surrounded by love, and in turn radiated that love to all those around her. This love only deepened as her family grew. Margie was blessed with a niece and a nephew, Melissa and Luke, whom she loved as her very own.

Margie had a keen appreciation for the arts and culture, especially movies, music, and books. One of the annual traditions she shared with her family was to see as many Academy Award-nominated films as possible and make predictions about Oscar winners. Margie's beautiful voice — in speech, in laughter, and in song — uplifted, encouraged and inspired countless others. For many years, Margie shared the gift of her singing as a cantor at St. Peter's Church in Westernport and for masses at Bishop Walsh.

Margie found her greatest joy in bringing joy to others, which she did through sharing experiences, giving treasured gifts, and making memories. She had a way of making people feel seen and appreciated for the things that made them special and unique.

Margie's career

Margie's career as a respected servant–leader, trainer, and educator spanned over four decades. Margie began her career as the Director of Religious Education at Saint Peter's Parish in Westernport, Maryland. She continued to touch the lives of countless many as the Director of Catholic Educational Ministries of Western Maryland, based in Cumberland, Maryland. Later, she served as the Director of Faith Formation at Good Shepherd Church in State College. In the concluding phase of her professional life, Margie returned to her roots in the mountains of Western Maryland as Director of Mission at Divine Mercy parish — a faith community formed from St. Ann Church in Grantsville, St. Gabriel Church in Barton, St. Joseph Church in Midland, St. Michael Church in Frostburg, and St. Peter Church in Westernport.

…she wanted our Catholic faith to be as accessible to as many people as possible, especially to the young…[she] wanted to be sure that all voices had the opportunity to be heard.

Margie's legacy

In 2025, Margie was afflicted by a rare neuromuscular disorder that would prove fatal. With the steadfast support of her family, she faced this hardship with grace, courage, dignity, and faith. In her final days, Margie communicated that her life was filled with love, and she was grateful for all the people who had walked alongside her. Even as illness robbed her of her ability to speak, Margie wrote on her notepad to a visiting friend: "I feel blessed and very lucky."

Margie reminded us that love lingers, and hers will always be with us.

In Margie's honor, her family's wish is that we all strive to spread love and kindness.
